FLIGHT TRAINING - Dubois Aviation flight training at Chino Airport

New student pilots are often shown long equipment lists before they know what their instructor or aircraft actually requires. A better approach is to begin with a small, reliable kit and add equipment as your training moves into navigation, night flight, and cross-country planning.

Start with communication and organization

Your headset is the most important personal cockpit item because every lesson depends on clear communication. Choose one that fits properly and is compatible with the airplanes you will fly. A dedicated flight bag then keeps the headset, checklist, charging cables, writing tools, and other equipment protected and easy to find.

Items worth carrying on early lessons

  • Aviation headset and protective case
  • Small notebook and two working pens or pencils
  • Current checklist approved for the aircraft
  • Government identification and required pilot documents
  • Water and weather-appropriate clothing
  • Phone charging cable and an appropriate backup battery

Add equipment as the syllabus requires it

Cross-country lessons introduce charts, navigation logs, flight-planning calculations, and electronic flight bags. Instrument training adds an instructor-approved view-limiting device. Night training requires dependable white light for inspection and a red-light option that can help preserve night adaptation in the cockpit.

What not to buy too early

Avoid buying mounts, adapters, or expensive electronics until you know the airplane type, available cockpit space, connector requirements, and your instructor’s preferred workflow. Equipment should support your scan and decision-making, not cover instruments or compete for your attention.

DuBois students can ask their instructor to review a proposed setup before ordering. If you are comparing training programs, visit our aircraft fleet and flight-training course overview.
