A private-pilot study library does not need to be large. It needs to be current, organized, and connected to what you are practicing in the airplane. Begin with official FAA references and the documents for the aircraft you fly, then add a course text or test-preparation resource that matches your instructor’s syllabus.
The foundational FAA knowledge reference
The Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge explains the principles behind aircraft systems, aerodynamics, weather, navigation, airport operations, decision-making, and other subjects used throughout training. The FAA offers its handbooks digitally at no charge; some students prefer a printed edition for highlighting and notes.
Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (2026), FAA-H-8083-25C
A printed copy of the FAA handbook covering the foundational aeronautical knowledge used throughout private-pilot training.
Best for: Student pilots who prefer a physical reference for study and notes

- The current airplane flight manual or pilot’s operating handbook for the aircraft
- The checklist approved or accepted for that aircraft
- The current Airman Certification Standards for the certificate sought
- Current regulations relevant to your training and operations
- Your flight school’s syllabus and stage expectations
Do not substitute a general book for aircraft-specific limitations, procedures, weight-and-balance data, or performance information. Those details must come from the documents applicable to the airplane being flown.
Use books actively
Before each lesson, identify the knowledge areas and maneuvers you expect to cover. Read those sections, write down questions, and connect the material to the preflight briefing. After the lesson, revisit anything that was unclear in the airplane. This turns reading into preparation rather than an isolated homework task.
ASA CX-3 Flight Computer
An electronic aviation flight computer for common planning calculations, conversions, wind problems, and performance work.
Best for: Students preparing flight plans and knowledge-test calculations
